La Processione delle Catene è un rito caratterizzante la città di Troia nella Settimana Santa che precede la Pasqua. La sua ideazione potrebbe risalire alla volontà del Vescovo Mons. Emilio Giacomo Cavalieri al fine di rifocillare la fede sopita degli abitanti della città. La processione delle Catene prende vita alle ore 10 dalla Chiesa di S. Basilio Magno, dalla quale i fedeli procedono per raggiungere i Repositori (meglio noti come i “Sepolcri”), allestiti nelle chiese situate nel centro storico di Troia.
Si tratta di una vera e propria processione penitenziale, ricca di passione e impeto, nella quale il ruolo dei cinque penitenti viene tramandato di generazione in generazione da molti secoli. La penitenza consiste nel trasportare una croce pesante sulle proprie spalle (fino a 30 chili). Il silenzio cittadino viene interrotto dal loro arrivo, preannunciato dal battito della trocchiola, strumento utilizzato dai bambini, e dal rumore delle catene a cui sono legati i piedi nudi dei penitenti.
Il cinque rappresenta un simbolo ricorrente di questa tradizione: i cinque penitenti ricordano i cinque Misteri Dolorosi del Santo Rosario; il lasso di tempo in cui i penitenti non possono sospendere questa pratica, nonché cinque anni, rimandano alle cinque piaghe di Gesù Cristo.
